If you are lucky enough to be in Edinburgh for Hogmany (New Year) then you're in for a treat. The entire city comes alive with crazy be-kilted Scotsmen and those who've taken up residence (I'll be there somwhere no doubt).
Personally I think that the street party is over-rated but being out on The North Bridge when clock stikes midnight is amazing, you'll be between twin fireworks displays rocketing out from the Castle and Carlton Hill.
There's plenty of bawdy and brilliant pubs up and down the Royal Mile that will be chock-full of revellers singing along to traditional acoustic music.
